I am a sports and exercise enthusiast; I also enjoy running as a form of exercise and relaxation. Unfortunately, like many others, I also suffer from those hideous and painful toe bumps that we know as Bunions, which are severely aggravated by excessive running. Wearing comfortable shoes that accommodate Bunions and prevent them from developing is very important to me particularly in a running shoe.

Let me first explain to you in more scientific terms what exactly a Bunion is and how it is formed;

What Precisely is a Bunion

A common bunion consists of enlargement or prominence of the inner portion of the joint at the base of the big toe; this can also occur at the small toe, which referred to as a bunion Sette. The enlargement is in fact just the misalignment of the big toe joint or in some cases additional bone formation. This deformity tends to be progressive and can increase with time, although the symptoms may reduce. I have noticed that symptoms such as inflammation, pain, redness, and tenderness in the enlarged joint or bone formation can occur, and arthritis can develop at many later stages if not taken care of.

Symptoms and Causes of Bunions

I have found that there are many assumptions as to how Bunions are caused, but the exact cause of a Bunion has not been discovered as of yet.

According to sources and my experience there are however a few factors that contribute to the development and aggravation of a Bunion;

  • Genetic inheritance
  • A foot injury
  • Birth defects and deformities
  • Tight fitting and narrow toe shoes
  • High heeled and pointed heel shoes
  • Health conditions such as arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

Signs and Symptoms of a Bunion

  • A bulge or bump on the outside and base of your big toe or little toe.
  • swelling, pain or redness around your big toe joint.
  • Corns or caluuses may develop when your first and second toes overlap.
  • persistent and intermittent pain in the toe joint area.
  • More restricted movement of your big toe.

Bunions should not be left untreated, and if they become worse a doctor should be consulted, I have not had to see a doctor as of yet;

When to See a Doctor

Bunions under normal circumstances do not require any medical treatment, I have not yet required any medical treatment, but there are some cases where you will need to consult a doctor or orthopedic foot specialist;

  • When you have persistent big toe or foot pain.
  • The bump on your big toe becomes much more visible.
  • You are unable to move your big toe or foot or have very much difficulty in doing so.

Complications that May Result from Untreated Bunions

From what I have noticed Bunions may not always cause serious problems, but they are permanent unless they are surgically corrected.
Some complications I have seen that may occur that are related to Bunions are;

  • Bursitis; a painful condition that occurs when your small fluid pads or bursae which cushion your bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints becomes painful and inflamed.
  • Hammertoe; the middle joint of your toe becomes abnormally bent causing pain and pressure. Usually, the toe next to your big toe will be affected.
  • Metatarsalgia; pain and inflammation in the ball of your foot.

Preventing and Treating Bunions

Bunion pain can be mild or quite severe depending on how inflamed the bunion is and the pressure of the big toe pushing against other toes. My Bunion pain depends on the activities of the day and footwear that I use. For me, shoe inserts used to position your foot correctly and to provide arch support to reduce the severity of bunions as have proven quite useful. I have also used Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and warms soaks and ice packs to reduce the pain and swelling caused by my bunions. The most important factor for me in treating and preventing bunions is the correct footwear.My shoes have a wide enough toe area to accommodate bunions and soft and flexible uppers.
Roomy shoes with broad and deep toe boxes, flatter heels and good arch support will prevent and reduce bunions. I always avoid tight and narrow fitting shoes with high heels or any type of shoe that puts pressure on my big toe joint.

Here are a few steps I have tried, that you can take in order to prevent Bunions from growing further and becoming worse or more inflamed.

  1. Opt for shoes with a wider, square or round toe box with plenty of toe wiggle room and a small or low heel.
  2. Make sure that your running shoes have a wide and flexible toe box, good arch support and a well-cushioned heel. A snug fit around the Heel and plenty of room in the forefoot is ideal for someone who suffers from Bunions.
  3. You can cover the Bunion with a pad that is sold at most drugstores to prevent friction against your shoes.
  4. Give your feet a break during the day by taking your shoes off and not wearing heels for longer than three hours at a time.
  5. You can have your shoes stretched or modified by a shoe repair shop, and they can also smooth out rough edges that cause irritation.
  6. The right orthotics for your type of pronation particularly overpronation can also reduce the severity of a Bunion.
  7. Stretching and strengthening different parts of your feet such as stretching the Achilles Tendon to counter stress on your forefoot are also helpful. Calf stretching is crucial for women who like to wear high heels, and big-toe pulls, and stretching are great to strengthen your toes.

By following these tips and taking good care of my feet, I have managed to prevent Bunions from further developing as well as reduced the symptoms, pain, and inflammation caused by my Bunions.   • Women, in general, are much more flexible than men, and that counts for their feet as well. Women’s shoes need to be more flexible while still providing the right amount of control of the footstrike. Often women’s shoes have a different tread configuration which allows the foot to flex in a certain way.
  • Women also do not exert as much high impact forces as men on their foot strike, therefore, they do not need as much cushioning as men in a running shoe.

A Woman’s Footstrike Compared to a Man’s

When women walk or run the strike, the ground with a more shallow angle from heel to toe and their feet tend to splay much less compared to a man. This is known as a “less exorated” landing which basically means that a woman’s foot points forward at 12 o’clock when striking the ground, while a man’s foot points at a more ’10 to 1 o’clock position with striking the ground.

Shoe Implications

Women tend to run with a more overpronated gait than men, meaning that their feet turn inward too much. Therefore depending on the degree of the pronation, a woman should rather opt for a motion control or support running shoe. Because our feet are narrower and more flexible a narrower fit and more flexible shoe with a soft and flexible toe box is desirable.
In the case of us male runners, less motion control, and support are required in a more firm and hardy shoe with more cushioning. Men are also less prone to Bunions so need less flexibility, although men can also suffer from Bunions and in this case, should opt for a running shoe with a soft and flexible forefoot in a wider fit.
